dBase won't start

Out of the blue, dBase (2.6.0.1, XP Pro SP3) won't start. I used it
earlier in the day without problem but now I get an error message "Unable
to load FRAMEWINDOW object - Resource not found".

I reinstalled from the CD, without first deleting the program, and applied
the patches. Still no joy so I completely removed the program before
reinstalling from scratch. This didn't make a difference either. Any
suggestions?

I've seen that "Unable to load FRAMEWINDOW object - Resource not found"
message when I try to run more than 2 dbase sessions at a time. I don't
know why you would be gettng it.

That's exactly what I've just seen. An IDE instance open, then
double-clicked on a .dbf in Windows Explorer, that started OK, then
double-clicked on another .dbf in Explorer and I got the failure.

Interesting ... I tried the following:

Navigator:

tables|DBASESAMPLES
leftDoubleClick on fish.dbf and then again on sample.dbf
closed them both

Command pane:

close databases

and got a Memory Access Violation with file: and routine: both blank and line: 0

I wonder if this stuff will ever end one day?

Look at Frank Polan's thread: MAV in IDE on 26 September in bug-reports.

Maybe you could add a me-too to raise its profile!

Good grief ... I did on 27-Sep-2008 but had absolutely no memory of having done so when I test your problem on my system.

Got any idea what year it is?

Well, I don't remember 2003, 2004 is patchy and 2005 is clear, so I'd
say the date today is sometime in February 2006.

I guess that is why we end up with bugs in our code ... cannot remember what property we put in what object.

I have written the same function more than once and discovered I have two of them in different function libraries later.

Try rebooting -- clear out memory in the computer.

All this happened late last night. I didn't think of rebooting although I
had seriously considered putting a boot up one of those USB orfices round
the back after twice reinstalling dBase from the CD. <g> When the machine
started up this moring all was well.

HI,
When did you upgrade to SP3. I have heard some bad news about SP#
different things on different PC's. I dealt with one who's PC would'nt
boot after the SP3 upgrade
I got the machine about 3 weeks ago and installed SP3 within a day or so.
Initially I had a few problems with a BIOS that wasn't suitable for a dual
core processor and some of the drivers were out of date. This intially
caused a few blue sscreens but all those kinks were ironed out in the
first few days. The machine has been stable since then.

Yesterday I checked the version of Nero that came with the CD drive and
found there were updates available so I set about installing them. It
turns out that Nero completely uninstalls itself first and then sets about
downloading the replacement. When I saw that Nero was about to download
nearly 500Mb I stopped the thing. Starting with a new copy of Windows
plays havoc with one's monthly data cap as it downloads Mbs of patches.
Downloading SP3 didn't help either. As a result I am virtually on my data
cap for the month and anything over costs R2.00 per Mb. By waiting a few
days the new data cap will be available. I replaced Nero from the CD and
after that I couldn't get into dBase.

I'm wondering if replacing nero overwrote some SP3 files.

Yes this datacap caught me aswell. The otherday I loaded Photoshop CS3 onto
my PC.THat night, the updates came through, over 400 MB. THere goes your cap
out the window, especially if its near end of month

I can run into the same problem when I boot and update Ubuntu Linux if I do it towards the end of the month.

I have a 3Gb cap and when Ubuntu updates it can download as much 500Mb. One of the downsides to Linux, everything is downloaded and you can blow the cap just installing it.

I can't imagine that Nero would do that but yes, it is possible. Nero was
on the machine before SP3 was installed. Last night I reinstalled Nero
with SP3 already in place. Still, things seem to have settled down after
a restart and the two are playing nicely together at the moment. <g>

A while back, one of my brothers-in-law bought a laptop when he retired
just to be able to have access to email and his bank acounts. He signed
up for a minimal 3G/HSPDA package of 40Mb a month. The first day he
accessed the network Windows gobbled the lot and then some! He wound up
with an account of several hundred Rand for the excess and all this before
he'd received or sent one email. At least his copy of Windows was
up-to-date and he could access his bank to settle the bill. <g>

That's fair enough but sooner or later one presumably needs to get Windows
up to date.

Is there perhaps a way of copying the various updates to a CD from an old
machine with the same version of Windows so that they can be installed
before connecting to the Internet? This would also be useful in the case
where someone needs to replace a harddrive.

Of course. But then it's me deciding WHEN an update will be made, and
it's always after making a fresh image of the system/programs partition.
