Hoping someone might have some ideas for me on this here. I tried some hardware ng and got no help.

I have scanning in my app, and it has worked fine to a scanner connnected on USB port. I got a new development machine running XP Pro, and all still worked fine - for awhile. Recently, I started getting an error message. I get a message that the scanner is warming up as I always did, but then get msg to check my connection or power on my scanner. This happens both in my app, and in the software I got with the scanner on the XP Pro machine, so I know it is not just my app.

I hooked up the scanner to my old XP Home machine and all works fine still, so I know it is not the scanner. I tried using different USB ports on the new XP Pro machine, and still get the error. So I tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it, but still get the error. However, when reinstalling the driver, the software I got with the scanner reports the driver is already installed and I must uninstall it first. When I uninstall it, it disappears from the list of programs, but apparently the uninstall does not seem to be working correctly. When I reinstall it, in spite of the message, it again appears in the list of available programs to uninstall.

The install CD I got with the scanner does not list out the name of the driver file, so I cannot physically go in and delete the related files to be sure it is uninstalled. It only has an install exe file on it.

Anyone have any ideas on this. I really need to get scanning abilty back on my new machine.

The scanner is a Memorex 6142u.

Look for a driver update of the scanner.
I suppose you had an XP-update on one machine, but - for whatever reason
- not on the other. Would that be possible in your case?

Actually, the new XP Pro machine was scanning fine after I initially installed the driver that came with the scanner (same driver as on the old XP Home machine). It stopped working in my app and in other apps that access the scanner on the new machine.

This suggests that the scanner on the CD will work, but the driver on the machine may be corrupted in some way. My dilemna is that I cannot get the driver to uninstall or reinstall properly.

Maybe an XP Pro update was delivered and now a different version of the scanner is needed. Will have to check into that. Tho I also get updates on the ZP Home machine and it is still working fine.

Sure wish I could idenitfy the actual files associated with this driver so I could go in and delete them manually.

Also, you might want to run a Registry checker and look for malware.

I use Registry Mechanic AND Registry Booster. They both do a similar but
different check.
